The leaves are made of three layers:
- a protective, rough layer,
- then a fibrous layer under the latter, very concentrated in a bitter compound called aloin. Also called aloe latex, it is a substance used in pharmacology as a laxative.
The bitter taste of this latex serves as a repulsive for insects and birds

For the same reason, it is preferable to drink aloe vera juice over a full stomach, as to facilitate digestion.

In one of the studies, for almost half of the participants, non-dependant on cortic-steroïds, the consumption of aloe vera helped reduice the symptoms of asthma. The scientists think that these results could be due to the stimulation of the defense system and to the anti-inflammatory agents present in aloe vera.
Studies show that a high dosage of aloe vera can stimulate the production of white cells that help fight viruses and tumors.
